Recap with Jason Dunford

It’s April 19, 2012 and 99 days until the Opening Ceremony in London…Today, I am heading to Mission Viejo for the Fran Crippen Memorial Swim Meet of Champions, one more meet closer to the Olympics and a chance to get better on the road to the games. After my most recent meet at the Indianapolis Grand Prix did not quite go as planned—I felt well off my best in the 100 fly, finishing sixth in 53.11—I hope to turn in some better swims this weekend. My last meet came at the tail end of the last finals to complete my Master’s degree at Stanford, and in hindsight this probably affected my racing mindset. Now that I am done with my studies and have been fully focused on my training for the last two and a half weeks, I hope to continue building momentum on the road to the Olympics.

Maintaining perspective in this sport is essential and after not reaching my expectations in Indianapolis, it has been important for me to learn from my disappointment and move forward. An athletic career, like any other, is sinusoidal and it is important to know that when you find yourself in a trough that the next peak is just around the corner. Success comes down to working hard and staying positive. I am very lucky to have the opportunity to pursue this journey to the Olympics with the support of great coaches, teammates, sponsors and a whole nation behind me.
